Fourth graders win International Earth Day contest

Environmental Forum readers! Earlier this year we announced that Wells Fargo is supporting the Go Green Initiative Earth Day Contest. We offered up stagecoach rides as a prize to help encourage students to participate in the contest designed to inspire thinking about environmental issues within our communities.

I’m pleased to report that the rides were given last week at Cloverleaf Elementary School in Statesville, N.C., honoring six fourth-grade students whose collective contribution to the contest earned them a winning position out of more than 1,500 students from 145 schools in 30 states and 13 countries who entered the contest.

Please take a moment to view the six winning posters. Click on the links in the captions to go to where you can access audio and video clips, which contain interviews conducted by the students, embedded in the posters. From an environmental perspective we’re so impressed with the content and amount of effort that went into these posters! On the side, I’m completely blown away by how sharp fourth graders are today, compared to when I was in grade school many moons ago.

We encourage you to consider encouraging your local school to participate in the contest next year. In the meantime, please let us know what you think of this year’s winners!

I think they were fantastic! I had the chance to view all 1,550 glogs that were entered by students from 30 U.S. states and 13 countries from around the world, and I can say with certainty that the kids from Cloverleaf were outstanding! Thank you, Wells Fargo, for supporting our contest, and for being such great champions of sustainability!
