My 5-B 2010 holiday plan

My holidays begin with a Trick or Treat weekend. Every year I start with the best of intentions, but things soon spiral out of control.

First, leftover candy finds its way into every crevice of my life — my desk, nightstand, purse, etc. — as I go on a mission to consume every piece of candy before the holiday party season begins. Then it’s the business travel (for a series of annual planning meetings), complete with the huge cookie snack trays and pop I find so hard to resist. And even if I do make it past the cookie tray, I spend my time surrounded by amusement park comfort food and candy shops.

Next comes the sleep deprivation, as I cram in holiday shopping in between holiday get-togethers, at the same time indulging my love of Netflix, online Scrabble games, glossy magazines, Twitter, Facebook, and my Kindle. And don’t forget the Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s family feast traditions sprinkled in between.

In the end it’s just one big blur, and I end up returning to work so tired from my holiday vacation that, well…I need a vacation.

This year, though, I’m in search of holiday balance using a 5-B plan. I’m spelling my balance with five Bs: Breakfast, Budget, Breath, Burpees, and Bedtime.

  1. B is for Breakfast. I will fuel my body for the marathon called the holidays and eat breakfast every day. I find that when I eat right, I feel right. And when I skip it, those strategically placed candy bars become my breakfast. Then my sugar highs and low makes my busy days even harder.
  2. B is for Budget. My family will have a budget that includes all things related to our holiday traditions — not just the gifts. (Especially because I love the whole Black Friday thing. The standing in line, waiting for the doors to open gives me such a rush.) The problem is that without a budget I get all caught up in the hype and overspend to the point that I’m paying for Christmas on the 4th of July. Again, the holidays aren’t just about gifts. There’s also all the nights at the movies and dinners at our favorite spots family activities that need to be factored into the total budget.
  3. B is for Breath. I will do my yoga DVDs as part of a stress management. Yoga is something that I’ve wanted to stick with, but I start and stop right when it starts getting good. I’ve read about the benefits. I’ve bought the CDs and DVDs. Heck, I’ve even bought the VHSs.
  4. B is for Burpees. Exercise has been one of those 2010 goals that I’ve stuck with all year for the most part. But as things get busy exercise goes by the wayside. Burpees, however, are one of those no gym and very little space required exercises that my trainer taught me. So when things start to get crazy and I can’t to make it the gym, or I don’t feel like busting out an exercise DVD, I’m going to do old school burpees, push-ups, and sit-ups in the comfort of my home. (Note: Both my doctor and my nutritionist have cleared me to exercise. If you are joining me on this one, you need to do the same. It’s so worth it to involve your doctor. In fact, my new doctor has been a great partner in helping me develop better habits.)
  5. B is for Bedtime. This holiday season I’m going to bed, which will be easier said than done because I’m a night owl. I love staying up late. But staying up late no longer loves me. The holidays are busy enough when I’m fully rested and pure hell when I’m sleep-deprived. You try hunting down an American Girl ® pajama set on two hours sleep. Trust me, it’s not pretty.
